How often should you exfoliate your face?

So how often should you exfoliate your face? We’d say this is one of the most commonly asked questions about skincare. Too little exfoliation and you get build up, too much and you strip your skin of it’s natural goodness - so where’s the sweet spot?

It mostly depends on the face exfoliator that you use. Best exfoliator for face?Usually a chemical one (do not be scared off by the word chemical, it simply means exfoliating properties are within the formula instead of that physical rough texture you feel in others) as they are gentle and not as harsh on your skin as the gritty physical ones.

Let’s answer the question of how often should you exfoliate your face. The recommended approach is 2-3 times a week. This allows your skin to maintain its natural oil levels, removes build up of dead skin cells, unclogs pores and generates cellular renewal. If you have dry skin may want to dial it back to once a week, using too much face exfoliator can also cause irritation, redness and breakouts.

Exfoliating at night is the best way to go so that your skin can replenish any oils and allow for it’s natural repair process while you sleep.

What is a chemical exfoliant and the best exfoliator for skin at home?

Chemical exfoliants are non-abrasive, they contain active ingredients called alpha-hydroxy and beta-hydroxy acids. These ingredients encourage the skin’s cell turnover rate and give a visibly healthier complexion, treating pigmentation, mild acne caused by pore congestion, and other signs of ageing.

You know the exfoliants that have the beads in them and feel like sand paper on your skin? They’re a no no, opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant instead.

The importance of exfoliation

Simply, exfoliation should be a regular part of your skincare routine as it will keep your complexion smooth and the skin’s surface free of product and oil build up. It also gives other products the chance to completely absorb into the skin and do what they are supposed to. Brightening is another result of exfoliation, dull skin is often from dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin’s surface.
